Preservatives to Avoid in Dog Cat Food and Treats – Unsafe Toxic Carcinogenic…

In this article…

Preservatives (used in pet food) that are seriously detrimental to your dog’s, cats health - negatively impacting your animals quality of life, and shortening life-span;
Uses and dangerous side effects of these chemical-based preservatives.

1.0 Six Chemical-Based Preservatives You
Need to Get Out of Your Dogs Diet

BHA;
BHT;
Ethoxyquin;
Sodium Metabisulfite;
Propyl Gallate;
TBHQ

If you are feeding your dog or cat food or treats that include these preservatives – I recommend that you throw the product out and replace it ASAP with a product that is free of these chemicals…

The properties that make these six chemicals ‘good’ preservatives are also responsible for serious health issues in dogs and cats (other animals and humans!)

The seven preservatives noted above are chemical-based preservatives that can be found in many of the dog and cat foods and treats sold in…

Veterinarian Offices;
Pet Food Stores;
Grocery Stores, and;
Large Retail Stores such as Walmart.

These preservatives are added to ‘edible’ fats and fat-containing foods to prevent oxidative rancidity of fats and preserve odour, colour and flavour of a product.

These preservatives are very popular with Dog and Cat Food Companies as these chemical preservatives are:

Inexpensive, and;
Readily available and thereby enable and support high profit margins.

Do pet food manufacturers have to use these chemical based preservatives?

No.

But non-organic chemical-based preservatives are considerably cheaper than safe, healthy natural preservatives such as herbs (i.e. rosemary and sage), vitamins (i.e. vitamin E and C). Dehydration is also a way of naturally preserving food (i.e. pure, natural dehydrated chicken jerky), but dehydration reduces the volume of the product – so the manufacturer must either accept a lower profit margin or charge more for the product.

Chemical-based preservatives are of particular importance for companies that use rancid fats - for example pet food companies that purchase previously used fats from restaurants;

These fats are cheap and readily available and although not allowed in human grade foods are allowed in pet food;
This is also true for rancid meats etc. that cannot be used in human grade food, but are allowable in pet food;
When the manufacturer adds chemical–based preservatives such as BHA, BHT etc.:

The well-meaning, uninformed loving pet owner won’t smell how rotten the ingredients in the food really are, and;
The loving pet owner has no idea that they are exposing their loved pet to a whole host of ailments and an early death.

In the mid 20^th century (1950’s) the life-span of companion animals was twice what it is today…before the popularization of processed foods and associated food additives.

2.0 Uses and Dangerous Side Effects

BHA (Butylated Hydoxyanisole)

BHA is used as a preservative/stabilizer in:

Human and Pet Food;
Packaging preservative, and;
As a yeast de-foaming agent during food manufacturing.

Examples of Health Issues Caused/Triggered by BHA

Adversely effects brain function;
Adversely effects behaviour;
Allergies;
Cancer – Liver and Stomach
Cell abnormality;
Increased liver weight;
As a toxin stored in fat BHA can definitely contribute to the formation of Fatty Tumors;

BHA is a bioaccumulative substance (absorbed by the body at a faster rate than it can be eliminated by the body) - as a result it contributes to ongoing toxic loading of the body.

BHT (Butylated Hydoxytoluene)

BHT is used as a preservative/stabilizer in:

Human and Pet Food;
Cosmetics;
Electronic Transformers;
Embalming Fluid;
Packaging;
Jet Fuel and other engine fuels and oils;
Petroleum products;
Pesticides;
Pharmaceuticals;
Rubber;
Soaps and detergents.

BHT is a bioaccumulative substance (absorbed by the body at a faster rate than it can be eliminated by the body) - as a result it contributes to ongoing toxic loading of the body.

Examples of Health Issues Caused/Triggered by BHT

Biochemical and/or cellular level change…
Allergies;
Endocrine (hormone) disrupter…
Cancer – liver and kidney;
Developmental toxicity;
Fatty Tumors;
Thyroid disrupter.

Ethoxyquin

The other preservatives discussed in this article – if present in a dog or cat food/treat WILL be listed in that food item’s ingredient list.

Ethoxyquin is different than the other preservatives as you will NOT SEE ethoxyquin listed on the ingredients;

The reason for this exclusion from the ingredient list is that ethoxyquin is not added directly to the food or treat;

It is instead added to one of the ingredients in the food or treat product – specifically ethoxyquin is the preservative that is added to fish meal.
While not all companies use fish meal that contains ethoxyquin – most do!
Ethoxyquin is a lethel pesticide.

Ethoxyquin is an anti-oxidant used as a food preservative and a pesticide (called ‘Stop-Scald’). It is listed and identified as a hazardous chemical by OHSA. It has a rating of 3 on a scale of 1 to 6; with 6 indicating super-toxicity and requiring less than 7 drops to cause death. The containers that Ethoxyquin is stored and shipped in are marked with the word/symbol ‘POISON’. The US Department of Agriculture lists and controls Ethoxyquin as a pesticide.

Examples of Health Issues Caused/Triggered by Ethoxyquin

Allergic reactions;
Behaviour problems;
Bladder cancer, it has also been shown to cause;
Cancer of the kidneys;
Deformity in puppies;
Infertility;
Organ failure;
Significantly increases the chance of stomach tumors, and;
Skin problems.

Ethoxyquin is a bioaccumulative substance (absorbed by the body at a faster rate than it can be eliminated by the body) - as a result it contributes to ongoing toxic loading of the body.

Sodium Metabisulfite

Is used as a preservative in:

Human and Pet Food;
Wine;
Bleaching agent used in textile, pulp and paper manufacturing;
Also used in chemical, film (movie and photographs), pharmaceutical industries and water/sewage treatment.

Examples of Health Issues Caused/Triggered by Sodium Metabisulfite

Inhaled:

Coughing, shortness of breath;
Allergic, asthma-like reaction;

Ingested:

Abdominal pains;
Diarrhea;
Circulatory disturbance;
Central nervous system depression;
Nausea;
Vomiting

Sodium metabisulfite causes extreme allergic reactions in some sulfite-sensitive individuals (human, canine, feline) resulting in broncho-constriction, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, GIl disturbances, rapid swelling of the skin, flushing, tingling sensations and shock.

Propyl Gallate

Commonly used in combination with BHA and BHT in the following products:

Human and Pet Food;
Adhesives;
Hair products;
Lubricants;
Gum and candy, etc.

Examples of Health Issues Caused/Triggered by Propyl Gallate

Endocrine (hormone) disrupter…
Cancer causing:
Thyroid tumors;
Brain tumors;
Pancreatic tumors;
Adrenal tumors;
Prostate inflammation.

TBHQ (tertiary butylhydroquinone)

TBHQ is sometimes combined with BHT, but may also be used alone as a preservative in the following products;

Human and Pet food;
Cosmetics
Skin care products;
Lacquers, Resins and Varnish;
Explosives.

Examples of Health Issues Caused/Triggered by TBHQ

Asthama
Cancer (stomach cancer);
Cellular level change causing DNA damage;
Collapse;
Dellerium;
Dermatitis;
Endocrine disrupter;
Hyperactivity;
Nausea;
Rhinitis;
Restlessness;
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears);
Vomitting

Legal Cruelty and Abuse

I must admit that I find it strange - we have laws to protect our companion animals from cruelty and abuse perpetrated by an individual, but we allow and pay pet food manufactures to slowly kill our pet companions.

An illogical situation if it were not for the human condition of greed - which then explains the reason for such extreme lack of ethics and morals as exhibited by the pet food industry.

Mankind is not.

PART 1.0 Fatty Tumors - What, How, When and Why

1.1 What is a Fatty Tumor and How Is It Formed…

A fatty tumor is a soft mass under the skin.

Fatty Tumors form when the body is unable to rid itself of toxins via the body’s natural systems for toxin elimination – the intestines, kidney and liver. When a dog is constantly ingesting toxins the kidney and liver are forced to work overtime to clear out unwanted substances from the body. If the toxic load becomes too much for the kidney and liver to process affectively the toxins end-up remaining where they are not wanted - in the blood stream, digestive tract, etc. The constant presence of contaminates in the body puts added stress on the endocrine (glands which secret various hormones to regulate metabolism, sleep, mood, etc.) and immune system in addition to the kidney and liver.

The body’s natural reaction – the next line of defence is to engage its largest excretory organ, the skin. The body ‘captures’ the toxins and shifts them out of the way by storing the material in fat deposits just under the surface of the skin.

1.2 Characteristics of a Fatty Tumor (Lipoma, Fatty Lump)

A soft mass under the skin that:

Does not cause *hair loss;
Does not cause *pain;
Does not cause *redness or *irritation of the skin on its own
Is freely movable under the skin;

*The only time hair loss, pain or irritation occurs with these masses is, for example:

When the mass is located on the body of the dog, and;
The mass has increased in size, and;
As a result, is rubbing against the dog’s leg;
The mass may then cause hair loss or irritation as it rubs against the dog’s leg.

1.3 Fatty Deposits Are a Warning Sign

Fatty deposits are a warning sign – a red flag that tells you that:

That the body is under siege from constant ingestion of toxic, unwanted material;
The body’s system is out of balance and is not able to eliminate the toxic waste properly;
That the immune system is weak and requires care to improve its strength;

Diet, stress and exercise are huge factors in the health of the immune system;
A weak immune system leaves the body vulnerable to illness, infection and health problems..

1.4 How do These Unwanted Materials (Toxins) Get into the
Dog’s System

There are several typical ways in which toxins enter the dog’s body…ingested, inhaled and absorbed through surface contact...

Ingredients in commercially manufactured highly processed dog food - dry dog food, wet dog food, treats – for example;

Refined cereal grains;
Food colouring;
Chemical-based preservatives i.e. ethoxyquinand TBHQ ;
Sugar;
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) found in corn, soy, canola, safflower, cottonseed oil, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, sugar beets, etc.
Poor quality protein (dairy, eggs, meat and derivatives) derived from animals that were:

Raised on Factory Farms also known as concentrated animal feeding operations – CAFO (or other smaller farming operations that follow the CAFO methods);
Where animals are:

Forced to consume GMO corn;

GMO corn is high in pesticide residue;
This toxic pesticide residue enters your dogs body when your dog consumes the meat of animals fed GMO corn;

Food is laced with and/or animals are injected with antibiotics, steroids (growth hormones);

Toxins from inoculations,
And chemical-based flea, tick, worm and heartworm preventatives;

There are many alternatives that can be used instead of the chemical-based treatments for deworming, and for dealing with ticks, fleas and mosquitoes - including herbal and homeopathic spot-on and collar drops, sprays, rubs and rinses, supplements and foods.

Other Contributing Sources of Daily Toxic Loading

Health care supplies and household items such as:

Dog Dental chews;
Dog Toothpaste;
Dog Shampoo;
Household cleaners;
Fluorinated water, water high in hard metal content;
Pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, on grass, road salt, etc. that is then absorbed through the skin of the paws, ingested by licking fur and paws;

Part 2.0 - DIY Holistic Treatments, Remedies

2.1 Conventional Treatments Are Not a Remedy

Conventional practitioners of medicine (human and veterinary care) are oriented towards treating an acquired condition rather than treating the body as a whole entity. As a result, when a conventional partitioning veterinarian sees a fatty tumor the typical advice provided is:

As long as the tumor is a) benign and b) not impeding physical function, just leave the tumor as is;
If the fatty tumor is in the way of proper function the following options may be offered;

Surgical removal;
Liposuction;
Salve and/or;
Steroid injections.

The fundamental problem with these conventional interventions is that they do not address the root cause of the condition. If the root cause is not addressed the tumors will:

Continue to exist and will in many cases grow;
If removed will re-grow;
May eventually escalate to a malignant mast cell growth.

Many practitioners of conventional veterinary medicine will tell you that there is nothing that you can do to:

Reduce the size of the existing fatty tumor;
Eliminate the existing fatty tumor.
And should you opt for one of those conventional interventions:

There is nothing you can do to prevent the reformation of the fatty tumors.

This is incorrect! You CAN reduce and even eliminate fatty tumors permanently.

Failure to take proper action can result in a worsening of your dog’s health and quality of life.

To stop the formation and growth of these tumors you must treat the root cause – toxic loading which may have also progressed to glandular malfunction.

2.2 DIY Holistic Care Approach

Your Dogs Diet

Part One - Review What You Are Currently Feeding Your
Dog, Make Changes

Do a thorough review of what you are feeding your dog and remove all items that contain toxins and species inappropriate food stuffs.

Consider completely removing commercially manufactured dog food and treats from your dog’s diet and replace with:

Species appropriate food - either:
Homemaderaw, fresh whole foods, and/or cooked food;
A commercial raw food diet with supplements.

If you want to keep your dog on commercially prepared dog food:

Make sure you know how to select a relativelytoxic-free product;
Unfortunately when it comes to mass-produced commercially manufactured dog food, good and bad becomes a relative term.

Whole fresh foods high in first quality antioxidants and nutrients.

Topical Treatment for Fatty Tumors (Lipomas)

Sage
Sage has a natural affinity to attract fat. You can apply sage extract topically to the lipoma on a daily basis.

Turmeric
In addition to supplementing your dog’s daily diet with Turmeric, this herb can also be used topically to treat lipoma.

Preparation and application

Combine:

1 tsp of turmeric, with;
1 tsp of olive oil, or grape seed oil or almond oil;

Mix:

Mix until the ingredients form a soft, well blended paste;

Apply:

Apply the resulting paste directly to the skin surface of the fatty tumor;

Please note that the natural colour in turmeric will stain clothing, carpet etc.

So after application you should restrict your dog to an area where the stain will not adhere to items that you value, or;
Put your dog outside for a while.

This treatment can be used once or more a day.
Turmeric is safe for pregnant dogs.

3.0 Signs of Malignant Mast Cell Growth

If your dog does have a fatty tumor it is important to monitor that fatty lump for changes…

Sudden change in appearance, i.e.
The tumor suddenly hardens;
Begins to grow lumpy and nodular;
Has begun to bleed;

Get to your veterinarian and have the tumor tested for malignancy ASAP.
