Making a bad behavior good
Often, there’s something we humans enjoy doing that just drives our dog nuts.
Maybe it’s a game of basketball or baseball, tennis, horseshoes or badmitton.
We’re focused on the activity, and the dog wants in on the fun too. But we give him no role in our sport. We expect him to watch from the sidelines, like a fan.
But he doesn’t. He barks and jumps around, he bolts into the playing area and chases after the ball. He disrupts the entire game, angering his humans. Maybe he even barrels into someone and knocks him or her to the ground.
At this point, we humans try to settle him down, but we’re angry. We yell at him to get, to go lay down. Maybe we grab his collar and drag him inside, while he tries in vain to struggle and get back in the game.
In time, the activity becomes a sort of trigger for the dog. He sees a basketball and instantly he is fixed on it, obsessed with it. As soon as we start bouncing it around, the dog starts behaving wildly and can’t think of anything but the basketball.
“Gotta get that ball. Gonna get that ball,” our dogs would say if they could talk. “Ball ball ball. Gotta get that ball. Get the ball. There’s the ball. Gotta get that ball. Ball ball ball."
We learn that we simply can’t allow him to be around anymore when we’re playing these games.
So we leave him inside, and from the window, he watches and whines. Perhaps he scratches up window ledge.
But do we have to keep him inside and away from our fun?
I say that in almost all circumstances, no, we don’t.
These types of activities create great opportunities for incorporating our dog into our fun. And if we can’t find a role for him in our sport, there is still a fantastic training opportunity presented by these situations.
The mental challenge of training him to behave in a particular way — perhaps sitting nicely on the sidelines for ten minutes and then getting a bone to chew on — will be a strenuous mental exercise for him and will likely do a great job of wearing him out.
Brent and I have always looked at Sensi as part of our family, and we like to include him in as much of what we do as possible.
For that reason, we’ve given Sensi a designated role in most of our favorite past times.

It might not be the best thing for a precious table that can’t be scratched by dog nails, but if it’s OK with the table, it’s a pretty cool trick to show your friends.

Halloween Dog Walk for a good cause
A nice email just arrived from Heather Armstrong who helps to run the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (although it should really be the Gambia Horse, Donkey & Dog Trust as they look after a lot of dogs, too) saying that they hope to organise a national dog walk in aid of the charity on 31st October. She is looking for volunteers to help set up local walks and has designed some posters to help publicise each local event. The Science Surrounding Children Dogs Part 1 The Good

Oh my, but KAWAII is cute! I guess that’s kind of the point? I love that cute is good for us.
All this talk of cute, a website and some observations at home got me thinking this week.
I recently saw this image posted on Facebook and I don’t mind admitting that it tugged at my emotions.
Around the same day, I was watching my two year old toddler (an unpublished and independent kawaii survey reports the toddler is somewhat cute) interacting with my dogs (they are cute, no survey required).

The toddler is currently learning (slowly) that the world is not 100% about the toddler. This involves me frequently coaching the toddler’s interactions with other people and children (“yes it’s very sweet that you love your friend and that you’re giving them a big hug, but now you’ve actually crash-tackled them to the floor and they’re crying, it might be time to give them space”) and more recently in a similar way with the dogs.
These home observations and website images got me thinking about how important my pets, and in particular, my dogs, were to me while growing up.
It got me wondering - why do so many of us have enduring psychological attachment to our childhood dogs?
And do our childhood experiences stay with us as firmly held attitudes into adulthood?
I plan to spend my next posts looking at some of the science surrounding children and dogs: the good, the bad and the ugly.

Why are dogs good for children?
The biophilia hypothesis suggests that people are instinctively attracted to animals and nature. It proposes that our relationship with them may contribute on an intimate biological level to our sense of fulfilment and identity. In our current busy lifestyles, often lived in industrialised city environments removed from ‘nature’ in its purest form, dogs and other companion animals offer opportunities for these ‘biophilic’ relationships. These nurturing relationships with animals are considered particularly important during early and middle childhood. Some research suggests that humans have a higher degree of attachment to dogs than we do to other companion animals; however, this may be a flaw in the way such studies have assessed attachment.

So it seems like there’s a lot to like about fostering a positive relationship between children and dogs. But what happens to children when such an important relationship ends? And do our childhood experiences stay with us into adulthood?

GOOD puppies!
member the other day when Aswell and me getted out and runned away? We was VERY BAD puppies that day!! But we did not get hurted or losted so we were not SO bad.
Today we was not bad!
We was very very GOOD puppies!!!!!
We have been outside lots to play today.
And She just seed that the gate was open!!!!
It popped open after He goed away long time ago. She did not see but we do. We could have runned away again.
But I does not!!!!
And Aswell does not too!!!
I plays nice in our yard!!
And Aswell too!!!
See?! We CAN be GOOD puppies!!!! When we likes to!
And we getted treats cuz we beed SUCH GOOD PUPPIES!!
He might not get no treats when He get home though!

SUCH good puppies
Really, we is very good puppies.
Today we do not scapes.
We stayed in wes yard and we do not ripped the fence.
But He do needed to make a better fence soon. She sayed!!
He wanted to wait until the snow goed away! So that snow better go away fast!!
Oh! But we do be bad one time today too!
We getted Hes watch from the bedroom cuz He forgetted to close the door and we do liked to chew the strap for Hes watch. It is good for chewing. But He do not liked us to chew that all up cuz now He cannot weared it!
He tells She to buy He a new one and get metal even though He does not like metal straps. I think leather is better for watches. And for chewing!
And Aswell too!!

Good dog bad dog
Today She taked we for a nother walk on we dock and this time I walked very good all the way to the very end even over the water and I did not falled in or getted hurted and I was not skerred. Well, okay, I was not SO skerred. I did shaked some when we did getted on the floaty dock.
Aswell did not get even a little bit skerred. He had TOO MUCH FUN going on we dock even though hes leg did keeped going down in the middle where there do be a little hole and he did not even learned to be kerrful there cuz he is just a dumb boy!
So I do be a good dog and Aswell do be the bad dog. AGAIN!
Do you knowed what Aswell didded?! Aswell thinked it was too fun to go sploring at the dock and the water so right after She bringed us back to we yard and putted we zzzttt collars on again, he turned around and he runned right through the zzzttt fence!!
He do not kerred if he do getted zapped!
He did runned in we lake and in we neighbours mud and he finded a dead fish and he rolled on it and then he picked that fish up and he carried it in hes mouth and he was going to keep that fish but then he seed that She did finded he and was going to get he so he dropped hes fish and he RUNNED AWAY!!
And She had hes leash AND foods in Shes pockets and She showed Aswell but Aswell still did not listened to She and every time She getted even a little bit close to he, he runned away from She!
Can you BELIEVED how bad that Aswell do be!?
He is SO BAD!!
And he getted all the way past the end of we street even more far that we go when we go for walks with She and then he was running into the bush on the nother side of the road and She was getting very skerred cuz if you keeped going through that bush there do be a HIGHWAY and OH MY GOODNESS that will be very terrible if Aswell getted to the highway because he is too much DUMB and he do not knowed that there do be skerry things that can hurt we if we do not be GOOD.
And She was getting mad at Aswell and at He too cuz He seed that Aswell runned away and He did not comed to help She. He keeped working on the boat!! So that maked She even more upsetted!
Anyway!
She could not getted Aswell to come for foods.
She could not getted Aswell to come for hes leash. I guess Aswell do only thinked leash walks is too exciting if he do not already be running free. Too bad for She. And if he getted to the highway too bad for Aswell too!
She was getting more and more upsetted! And me too!! I was still in we yard but I was barking and crying so loud She can heared me right to the end of we road!
But then a good thing happened!
Some peoples did be walking they dogs on they leashes and they dogs do be dogs Aswell do not knowed yet so he did had to go sniff those new dogs and She called to those peoples that if they might could catched Aswell She would preciate it and they did tried but Aswell keeped jumping back away from they so they can not catched he!
But he did keeped going to see they dogs and She getted close to he and She showed he the goodest deer meat foods She had in She pocket for he and Aswell did wanted that food but he did not wanted to get catched so he tried to get the food without getting catched but She winned and he did getted catched and do you know what Aswell did when he getted catched?
He rolled right over like he thinked She might like to give he a belly rub!! On hes wet stinky fishy muddy belly!!
She did not think She might liked to give Aswell a belly rub at all because She was out of breath and upsetted and She did not had funned chasing Aswell but She did gived he a little one and then She putted hes leash on hes collar and She walked all the way back to we house and I was so happy to see She and Aswell getted home that I did not shutted up for until She and Aswell getted all the way back in the house.
SO now we doors is locked and we do not getted to go out in we yard at all. Aswell do had to stay in we nighttime pen all day too!
She would getted he to maked we a new fence in we back yard but we do knowed that Aswell do liked to climb fences so that might could be a lot of monies for nothing unless we putted a lid on top like we had on we pen and She do not thinked that will work too good!
But Aswell do not wanted to be outside now any way cuz he do be sleeping at Shes feet under Shes desk cuz he do be tired now!
He do stinked though so maybe he might needed to had a bath!

The good and the bad an update
So many things, so little blogging. I know I have been lax about blogging. It is what it is I suppose. I am better at keeping my FB page updated if you want real time info for the record. This cutie is Dora. She just finished her stint on the K-9 Corrections program and headed to her new home today. They are a very lucky family. She is very smart and was a lot of fun to work with. Cute no?
The tug was a donation from the Loyal Biscuit Tug ME Toy Co. Tug is one of my Jacks favorite games and one that can really help build a relationship with a dog. I am taking a bit of a hiatus from K-9 Corrections until spring. I need some time to recharge my batteries and figured this was a good time of year to do it. I have never been a fan of driving in the snow. Plus they are going through some changes at the facility so this will give them time to settle in to their own new routine.
On a sad note the french mastiff I told you about before that got adopted passed away unexpectedly. He had been having some behavior episodes that wasnt like him so we think perhaps he had something neurological happen. He was found curled up in his bed like he was asleep in the morning so we believe it wasnt painful. I am just grateful he had the opportunity to have a great home for awhile first. R.I.P sweet Brutus.
Zola is still doing ok. She has had a few mornings of not eating her breakfast. I think it might be because eating takes a long time for her now. Some days I have to puree her food. Her mouth only opens about 3/4 to 1/2 an inch. She is still very happy and is as spastic as always. Even the days she hasnt eaten well she still loves her stuffed Kong and chewing on her antler. She gets medications 4 times a day (for her liver shunt) and is still good about taking them all too. (luckily for me)
It is an odd thing to live with a dog you know has a short time left. In some ways it is good that you know it is coming. In theory it gives you time to prepare and you live in the moment. In other ways it sucks. I try to focus on the fact she didnt have much time left when we took her in and yet she surpassed that time. We have had her over a year when we expected to have her for only a few weeks or months. Her second birthday is in February. My fingers are crossed. We are getting a new digital x-ray machine at work soon so I am hoping to take her in to get a better look at what is going on. Maybe we can also try stretching her jaw while she is under for the x-rays. We shall see. I dont want to do anything that will bother her or put her at risk either.
Regardless what happens I am happy I took her in. She is the personification of joy. She has no idea what the future holds and she is happy and having fun. That is all that really matters. Ignorance is bliss.We should all be so lucky if you think about it. Live in the moment and have fun while you can.
